Images for the history

The authentic photochronicle of the Baku oil industry of the nineteenth century is — one. Everything else in this fonds was made later and is named plainly: visual material, not a document of the epoch. There are no portraits of the founders in the fonds, and none will appear.

Sources of archival materials

There is one authentic historical photograph in the fonds: “Baku Oil Derricks”, 1886, the open media repository Wikimedia Commons, public domain. The remaining images — modern photographs of industrial and urban surroundings taken from the open bank Unsplash (Unsplash License: free use, including commercial use, without mandatory attribution of the author). They are used as visual material and as a reconstruction of atmosphere, not as documents of the epoch, and the captions state this in plain text.

Portrait images of the founders are not authentic photographs and are designated everywhere as reconstructions. All texts of the site are — a fictional-documentary invention: coincidences with real people, organisations and companies are accidental.

A demand to state the exact year each frame was taken has reached the archive three times. The archive answers that the year of a frame is not the year of the event, and insists on this.
